Southeast Virginia Advanced Manufacturing Pipeline The Southeast Virginia Advanced Manufacturing Pipeline (SEVAMP), a $2 million grant awarded to Thomas Nelson Community College and the Greater Peninsula Workforce Development Council by the Department of Labor, focuses on facilitating training, hiring and placement of people in manufacturing positions. To that end, SEVAMP conducted 27 sessions in 2006 with 476 attendees, informing and screening applicants for SEVAMP manufacturing partners. This is an active pipeline that works! Further, the SEVAMP has successfully facilitated the placement of 2,239 employees in 39 manufacturing companies. According to Pipeline Coordinators, this system reduces hiring time by up to 30%, reduces hiring costs by up to 50%, and increases retention by up to 84%. What does this grant mean to Hampton Roads: 1.) an increase in the ability of workers to obtain "good" jobs with "good wages" 2.) the development of unskilled and under skilled populations 3.) contribution to the continuing economic vitality of the region, and 4.) improvement of job skills standards to simplify the employment processes.
